Literally: “hallway radio” / meaning: the flow of rumors inside a company or organization
Once again, there is talk about that fling that you allegedly had with the new accounting assistant. Or wait…maybe you really had it? Is there so much whispering about it that you can no longer tell the truth from rumors? That means the Flurfunk is yet again broadcasting on all waves.
“To know something from the Flurflunk” is roughy the equivalent of the (equally great) English expression “to hear something through the grapevine.” It describes the “in-official” flow of communication inside a company or an organization that is spread by word of mouth between colleagues. It is particularly active when restructuring is imminent and heads may fall. In this sense, it is the exact opposite of the official internal communication via intranet, house journals, bulletin boards etc.
Needless to say, the Flurfunk turns out to be extremely reliable in about 99,9 % of cases. Unfortunately, this also includes the chat about your romances with colleagues.
